sad robot

Stars are asking you if you're a sad robot. They want to know, because they're releasing their new EP, Sad Robots, through their spankin' new Sad Robots web site. The music for Sad Robot was written and recorded over the summer at Studio Plateau in Montreal, Quebec.
Stars are a Canadian indie pop band. Originally formed in Toronto in 2000 by vocalist Torquil Campbell and keyboardist Chris Seligman, the band relocated to New York City and then subsequently to Montreal. The band also includes singer-guitarist Amy Millan and bassist Evan Cranley. Drummer Pat McGee has toured with the band for years, despite not appearing on their albums until the release of Set Yourself On Fire.

Violinist Genevieve Walker and guitarist Steve Ramsey (of Young Galaxy) have toured with the band in the past; neither are joining the band on their current tour, which features Alan Snoddy on guitar.

The band’s breakthrough single was “Ageless Beauty”, from their 2004 album Set Yourself on Fire. While released to minimal fanfare in Canada in October of 2004, Set Yourself on Fire slowly gained a strong following and critical praise soon after its 8 March 2005 U.S. release.

Buriedfed

The album's first single, "Buriedfed", lives up to those impressive connections, pouring a woodsy, deceptively upbeat folk song through the damp, woozy atmospherics of Horn of Plenty. The proper setting could be a rowdy bar as easily as that record's quiet bedroom.

It's not a complicated composition. But the photographer, within a fraction of a second, was able to show the heroic side of human behavior.''

New Goodbye

Hey Rosetta! is a six member group hails from the rocky shores of St-John’s Newfoundland,Canada. The group was formed in 2005 by front man Tim Baker. In June of 2008 Hey Rosetta! released their newest album “Into Your Lungs (and around in you heart and on through your blood)”. The group consists of:

Tim Baker (Vocals, Guitar, Piano)
Adam Hogan (Guitar)
Josh Ward (Bass)
Phil Maloney (Drums)
Kinley Dowling (Violin)
Romesh Thavanathan (cello)

an album full of energetic, well-written, wonderful songs

The band creates a massive, layered big-band sound that incorporates the sometimes more emotional and evocative elements of music combined with stirring band chants. This all interplays against the traditional elements of piano, violin, cello, folk and pop-rock in an un-conventional and audibly workable musical base.Their singer has a beautiful, poignant, powerful and slightly raspy voice, which sounds just as great live. The songs are like fantastic poetic chapters of an old classic storybook supported by very powerful music that swells and bursts beautifully. The music has a very wide and beautifully filled up mixing.

Interstellar Overdrive - Surface b

Genre:Rock, Experimental, Indie, Post - Rock
Country:Greece

Every Day

The core of what was to become interstellar overdrive was formed around 1998 in Athens, Greece, since then little or no resemblance exists. The genre changes dramatically with every new project. In 1999's 'Battle of the Bands' contest (held in Athens) the band was awarded with the first prize leading to the realisation of the debut album (Pegasus Records, 2000; reproduced in 900 copies).
From April 2002 to January 2003 the band, with a different line up this time, records a second album titled 'Surface b' again for Pegasus Records (reproduced in 600 copies). The musical style is a lot different than the debut album with influences ranging from indie to post-rock. Yet, within this album there is evidence of a more experimental and less commercial approach to music.

another great band from Greece..highly recommended!
The band consisted of :
@lex Sakellariou: drums, percussion
Orestis G. Karamanlis: electric, acoustic & classical guitars, bass, percussion, harmonica, xylophone, piano, vocals

Pepy Kosma: voice

Dr.Aris: bass
Dinos Bourandas: electric & classical violins, viola.

Additional Musicians: Manolis Angelakis [Illeagal Operation]: vocals, Aris Oikonomou: jaguar guitar, Dimitris Ioannou [Bokomolech]: vocals; Grigoris Kokkinos: drums; Sofia Labropoulou: harp of Asia Minor; Akis Bogiatzis [Sigmatropic]: vocals; Artemis Bogri: vocals; Ifigenie Bogiatzaki: vocals; Alan Massie: flute; Alexander Zhibaj: cello.
Noam Chomsky's voice was also used with his permission!!

The music of interstellar overdrive has also been used in film and theatre. At the moment the band undertakes an even more experimental approach investigating alternative ways to produce music using new media (even though its members are scattered).

Antony and the Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now

Artist:Antony and the Johnsons
Album: I Am A Bird Now
Year:2005
Genre:Indie Pop, Art Rock, Avantgarde
Country:United States

I Am a Bird Now is the critically-acclaimed second album by New York City band Antony and the Johnsons. It was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize on July 19, 2005 and was announced as the eventual winner on September 6, 2005. After winning the prize, the album shot up the UK albums chart from #135 to #16 in one week, the biggest jump in the history of the Mercury Music Prize. A few weeks later, the album went back up the charts at #5.
Review
"The album features guest appearances by Rufus Wainwright ("What Can I Do?") and Devendra Banhart, and by lead singer Antony Hegarty's childhood heroes Boy George and Lou Reed. The cover is a photograph by Peter Hujar of Warhol superstar Candy Darling on her deathbed.

I'm completely overwhelmed by this record. I Am a Bird Now is beyond any semi-confectionary aesthetic distance that you might bring to discussing your average album. This music grabs a hold of you and doesn't let go. It feels timeless and gorgeous and bigger than life. It may not be "soul" in the strict, music appreciation 101 sense, but it could make even the most jaded atheist approach a metaphysical regard. It is assured, seering and majestic SOUL to the utmost. I'd put on my critic's cap and dive into scrutiny, but I am too enraptured by this artist's music.

For some reason my CD of I Am a Bird Now is skipping and every skip is like a dagger in the heart. The pure unadulterated emotion on display decries such tedious interruptions. I never thought I could appreciate Boy George till I heard him singing with Antony on the impossibly touching "You Are My Sister." And there is no point in dwelling on the gender bending (I didn't even want to acknowledge it, to tell you the truth) aspects of the artist because his songs are so 'universally' moving. Whereas Antony and The Johnsons was a stark, chilling affair that was arresting and perhaps a little disconcerting, this album is a shining beacon of hope and healing amidst ceaseless pangs of heartache and loss. The gospel-tinged "Fistful of Love" brings in a horn section and Lou Reed for a particularly uplifting experience that bridges the middle of the album splendidly.

I have to see Antony perform these songs. It's not a question of the recorded material not being enough, but I could see the breathtaking sweep of these songs taking on a whole new power in a live setting. I'm reminded of the scene in Mulholland Dr. where the two principal characters are in the theater listening to Rebecca Del Rio's heart-rending solo version of Roy Orbisons "Crying." I love this scene so much; how incredibly heavy it feels. I understood completely why they cried, and probably did a little myself. What's interesting is the one thing that kept the whole thing from utter hokeyness was that the song was sung in Spanish.

In this sense, I Am a Bird Now is authentic and moving because it hits you in ways that are both recognizable and foreign. Like Nina Simone, Antony has this uncanny ability to take your standard blues progression and give it authority that skips whatever reservations and preconceptions the audience might lean toward and aims directly for their empathy and, ultimately, their belief in the innate, transcendent force music can contain."(tinymixtapes.com)

Devotchka - A Mad and Faithful Telling

Artist: Devotchka
Album: A Mad and Faithful Telling
Year: 2008
Genre:Indie, Folk Rock, Gypsy Punk
Country:United States

DeVotchKa is a four piece multi-instrumental and vocal ensemble that fuses Romani, Greek, Slavic, Bolero, Mariachi (and many more styles) music with American punk and folk roots. They take their name from Anthony Burgess' Nadsat word for "young girl," which is itself derived from the Russian word (девочка) of the same meaning. Based in Denver, Colorado, the quartet is made up of Nick Urata, who sings and plays theremin, guitar, bouzouki, piano, and trumpet; Tom Hagerman, who plays violin, accordion, and piano; Jeanie Schroder, who sings and plays sousaphone and double bass; and Shawn King, who plays percussion and trumpet.

an incredible piece of work. .Simply beautiful music..Great vocals!!

"DeVotchKa has always done the gypsyish-rock sound, and in their last album "How It Ends" they added a poignant string section.
Well, they do one better in "A Mad and Faithful Telling," a gloriously energetic, sepia-toned ride that juggles rock, pop, Eastern European dance, and a tinge of that heartbreaking orchestral music. As it makes you laugh and breaks your heart, DeVotchKa turns out their most balanced, polished album to date.
.......
Urata has one of those great warbling voices often found in Eastern European music. And the lyrics match his yowly vocals -- laments about greed, confusing love songs, and even a prayer where he announces that "you know I never hurt no one/What I have stolen won't be missed" and warns that "If you must take me/I can not go peacefully/I left someone waiting for me..."

"A Mad and Faithful Telling" is mad, but remains faithful to no style. Ballads, mariachi-flavoured dance and gypsy rock'n'roll are all woven into this amazing little album... and it ends up being their best."(E. A Solinas "ea_solinas")

Glowworm - The Coachlight Woods

Artist: Glowworm
Album: The Coachlight Woods
Year: 2008
Genre:Post Rock, Almbient, Atmospheric Rock, Instrumental
Country:United States

Beautifully produced atmospheric rock with touches of minimalist electronics. From the sweetly serene to the breathtakingly violent, this is an essential album for lovers of fresh orchestral sounds.

In late 2006, Portland musicians Kevin Davis and Jesse Robert W. drove over 1000 miles to reach a secluded cabin in the desert of southern Utah. They removed themselves from all familiar reality, letting their recording efforts become saturated by the surrounding atmosphere. The result is music affected by a lost time and place, resonating the desert’s sweeping horizons, blood red plateaus, and ancient, hollow canyons.

Glowworm's sound is that of carefully crafted orchestral and atmospheric rock, supported by tasteful electronica. The Coachlight Woods ranges from explosive feedback-driven guitar passages, to intelligent, emotive neo-classical string arrangements. It is a reverb laden struggle through uncharted territory, offering a unique take on style in a genre too often filled with copycats.

"I just lay on my bed, played this record, and tried hard to silence my thoughts and just listen. The music made it easier. I heard no voices, I heard no words, and the emotional depth of what I was listening to felt like an invitation to search deep inside myself and watch the inner geographies and places, those that you rarely see in their entire length unless you manage to surround yourself with the right sounds. Rainy days appeared in front of my eyes. Unknown paths too, leading to the distant places I’ll walk in the future. And the music kept on traveling, in slow motion, showing me some landscapes of immense beauty and color. I step out of the bed, the cello and the drums still sounding in my head, and the rain falling peacefully though the windows. Today was the perfect post-rock day, and this album made it possible. Immanu El -They'll Come They Come

Artist:Immanu El
Album: They'll Come They Come
Year: 2007
Genre:Post Rock,Indie-Pop,Ambient
Country:Sweden

Immanu El is a young Swedish band with a sound of guitar and keyboard soundscapes, low key, captive singing and with somewhat of a moving nordic presence. The music is focused on post/indie rock sounds in variated dynamics.Debut album "they'll come, they come" was released in the fall of 2007.

Atmospheric indie-pop with post rock influences

"Immanu El is a post-rock band from Sweden that was formed when a couple of high school friends decided to make music in the Summer of 2004. Like many other Swedish Post-Rock bands, Immanu El's music focuses on vocals even more so than bands like Logh, Ef and September Malevolence. Their first release was an CDR EP in 2005 called, "Killerwhale". After doing some live shows and touring with different artists such as Sigur Rós and the previously mentioned Ef they struck a deal with And The Sound records. In August of 2007 they released their full-length debut, "They'll Come, They Come".
Immanu El's music can be seen as a combination of ambient, Indie Pop (mainly because of the vocals) and Post-Rock. The vocals are somewhat similar to Jonsi's from Sigur Rós and are sang in English. The music is very atmospheric and prefers to stay subtle and not loud. Highly recommended for fans of Sigur Rós, Ef, Gregor Samsa and other Post-Rock bands that emphasizes on vocals."(Ruben Dario)

The Nechama girls’ soulful vocals, minimalist arrangements of acoustic guitars and drums, carrying reggae infusions, and the overall vibe of optimism.Reggae influences, soul-folk melodies, one of a kind harmonies and impeccable song-craft are highlights of this perfect showcase

Yann Tiersen & Shannon Wright - Pale White

Artist: Yann Tiersen & Shannon Wright
Album: Pale White
Year: 2004

Genre:Piano,Indie,Instrumental/Vocal

Yann Tiersen & Shannon Wright is a collaboration album between French musician Yann Tiersen and Shannon Wright, a female musician, singer and songwriter from USA. This album was recorded in just about twenty days.
No need to introduce Yann Tiersen well known for his Amélie Poulain and Good bye Lenin soundracks,he's a mainstream sensation who's dabbled in rock, punk, pop, and various works for stage and screen; a popular aesthete whose stark compositions are comparable to those of Erik Satie and Phillip Glass.
Shannon Wright, on the other hand, is just being discovered but is already known for her highly emotional records (4 albums released by Touch & Go, produced by Steve Albini), as well as for hard-nosed performances.
Entirely written, composed and recorded within 20 days, this record is a pure marvel and is produced by Fabrice Laureau (already sound technician for "L'absente" and producer of Françoiz Breut, Dirty 3, nif Trio, among others).Pure wonder of sensibility, simply moving. Shannon Wright and Yann Tiersen share the same sensibility and sense of propriety, giving birth to these 10 luminous and fragile tracks.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL!
