Gurdjieff, Tsabropoulos - Chants, Hymns and Dances

Artists:Gurdjieff, Tsabropoulos
Album: Chants, Hymns and Dances
Year: 2004
Genre:Piano, Neo-classical, Minimalism
Bitrate:320 Kbps
Country:Greece

The music is simple, yet subtle; Anja Lechner on violoncello, and Vassilis Tsabropoulos on piano together weave a full texture of unforgettable music. Most of the album us based on melodies by Gurdjieff, around a trio of pieces by Tsabropoulos. The whole is serene, mournful, inspiring.
This is a quiet, peaceful disc, and yet it's not the kind of thing you'll probably play as background music. Something about these melodies works its way right *below* your consciousness, so that you want to really listen to it, really lose yourself in it. There are no lyrics, no voices, and yet these "chants" seem to strive to communicate something exquisitely beautiful, something tragically forgotten.
Perfect. Impossible. Heartbreaking
"Philosopher, seeker after the truth, reconciler of science and religion, teacher, guru to artists, writers and musicians, Gurdjieff was an enigmatic figure; even his birthdate is uncertain: 1866 or 1877. He taught movements "to alter or heighten consciousness" at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, located outside Paris---a highly improvisatory process for which he composed equally improvisatory music. Technically untrained, he depended on skilled assistants to realize and write down his ideas, and found one in a devoted disciple: Ukranian pianist/composer Thomas de Hartmann, who selflessly suspended his own career and, after Gurdjieff's death in 1948, privately published and recorded some of their collaborations. As a composer, Gurdjieff, born at the border of Armenia and Turkey, was influenced by the region's ethnic and cultural diversity, by his childhood memories of the religious and philosophical songs improvised by his father, a Greek troubadour, by the hymns of the Greek Orthodox Church, and by his extensive travels through Europe and Asia. For this recording, the performers themselves arranged his compositions for cello and piano, adding five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos, including three based on Byzantine hymns. Both players have been involved with Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox music; both are expert improvisers. Their strong feeling and affinity for the material allows them to approach it with both reverence and freedom; the playing is primarily subdued and inward. The piano texture ranges from delicate tinkling to full-blooded chords and arpeggios; the cello, playing mostly in the low and middle register, often in unison with the piano, sounds dark, warm and beautiful. The music, except for one lively dance, is slow, solemn, and mournful, in the minor mode. Melodies featuring oriental intervals are elaborated but not developed; based on single-note drones, harmonies are static or move in stepwise progressions but do not modulate. This lack of contrast and variety creates an otherworldly, disembodied atmosphere, despite several buildups of motion, dynamics, and intensity. "--Edith Eisler

Matthew Robert Cooper - Miniatures

Artist:Matthew Robert Cooper
Album: Miniatures
Year: 2008
Genre:Piano, Ambient, Neo-classical, Minimal
Country:United States

Matthew Robert Cooper is widely known as Eluvium and less known to be a part of Concert Silence. He makes cinematic ambiental guitar and piano-based music. His first album under his own name is released by Gaarden Records and is called “Miniatures”. Nine short saturnian interludes make up the first proper vinyl release by the sound artist who has intrigued your collapsed antenna many times before as Eluvium, Matthew Robert Cooper. Atmospheric chamber music from the cardboard box vortex. Miniatures moves from swirling spatial feedback manipulations to stripped down minimal piano pieces and back while you watch from the curbside the ghostly parade.

Brian Eno's ambient echoes and drones mixed with piano and string themes of Philip Glass austerity?..

"..Nine short, simply numbered titled saturnian interludes make up the release of atmospheric chamber music from the cardboard box vortex. Miniatures moves from swirling spatial feedback manipulations to stripped down minimal piano pieces and back while you watch from the curbside the ghostly parade. Eluvium’s strength lies in creating music that evokes a whole host of emotions. As horns hold long notes over a twinkling sheen of keys, the opener unfurls slowly and sets the contemplative mood of the album. Like what follows, it’s produced as if the music were being transmitted from within the womb: Sounds ring out and bleed together. Such fuzzy edges don’t mean that the sound is muddied, though. Instead, they charge the music with an insular coherence.
With one foot in pop music and one in avant-garde composition, Cooper has crafted an album that is at once minimal while deceptively complex. These instrumentals command a listener’s attention but never stoop to pop-music gimmickry. They exist in another world altogether, adrift in an echoing atmosphere.."indieducky.com

Yann Tiersen - Tabarly

Artist:Yann Tiersen
Album: Tabarly
Year: 2008
Genre:Piano, Instrumental
Country:France

Tabarly

Tabarly

This year Yann Tiersen's musical work will be featured in yet another movie. The movie is about the French sailor Eric Tabarly. He was a former officer in the French Navy. He won many races all from various boats he named Pen Duick. This is a movie/documentary of his life and times as a world renowned sailor.

Yann Tiersen gives homage to a great sailor, Eric Tabarly, who disappeared at sea in June 1998. In a completely sober ambiance, Tiersen puts into music the life of Tabarly, better known as The Sage of the Ocean. He evokes the navigation instruments, the tempests, the moments of calm and the beauty offered by the desert of the sea and give a discreet and delicate homage to this sportsman who unfortunately disappeared too early...

Mutyumu - Il y a

Artist:Mutyumu
Album: Il y a
Year: September 2008
Genre:Rock, Experimental, Avantgarde, Symponic Metal, Piano
Country:Japan

Track 3

MUTYUMU is a band from Japan, formed in 2001, and their self-titled debut was released in October 2006.Mutyumu are a five (or six)-person group whose web site describes them as a “funeral classical band,” an interesting concept. How else to describe a group that somehow fuses chamber music, death metal, Dead Can Dance, and Godspeed You Black Emperor-style drama into their songs? The tracks here range from a delicate piano intro, a heavy keys-drums-guitar fuzz piece, rock-metal-violin opera, and more. Vocalist Hachisunoit can sound like a demon or an angel, and the music supports whichever role she takes on.Mutyumu list an extensive roster of influences to their music; among the artists mentioned are Johann Sebastian Bach, Dead Can Dance, U2, Nine Inch Nails and Dimmu Borgir - a wide range of influences, all of which are actual musical references.

Ryota Yoda - guitars
Jyunpei Suda - drums
Hachisunoit - vocals
Yuko Ikenaga - keyboards
Chiaki Okamoto - violin, bass

A weird and wonderful musical journey

Will you like it? I think the answer depends on your tolerance for wildly disparate kinds of music; your patience for long and perhaps self-indulgent (though always melodic) mostly instrumental compositions; and, probably, your mood when you put this disc into your CD player. I’m going to recommend it not only because of the band’s bravery and talent but also because, wildly divergent though the styles on this album are, the whole thing is interesting, even beguiling. Just be warned that you’re in for a unique experience.Fans of experimental music in general, and in particular those with musical tastes ranging from metal to ambient, classical and jazz should find this release to be quite fascinating.
The album Il y a is planned to releasefor September 25, 2008!!

Monika - Avatar

Artist:Monika
Album: Avatar
Year: 2008
Genre:Indie, Piano
Country:Greece

Great voice, exceptional interpretation!! Irreproachable cohesion and succession of pieces. An incredibly touching disk,a big surprise from our country (Greece)!

A 21 year old student from Athens, Greece. At the age of 5 she started playing the piano and at 10 she bought her first guitar. A little later, she joined an orchestra in order to take saxophone lessons that lasted 5 years. She can also play some accordion and drums. She used to be a member of her brother’s band “Serpentine” where she did some basic vocals and played the electric guitar.

A year later, she came to Athens to study mathematics and started recording some songs in her computer. At the same time, she became a member of “Relevant Box” where she played the saxophone and did backing vocals. In the summer of 2005, she recorded some stuff for “My Wet Calvin” and in February she recorded a saxophone piece for the band “MENTA”. Her first single “Over the Hill” was released in early May 2008 and her debut album “Avatar” in the 19th of the same month.

Fazil Say - Black Earth

Artist:Fazil Say
Album: Black Earth
Year: 2003
Genre:Neo - classical, Piano
Country:Turkey

Check out this performance from Fazil Say, a world-renowned Turkish pianist and composer. Fazil Say is guest of the New York Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de France, Munich Philharmonic and many other leading orchestras worldwide.

‘Black Earth’ is a CD which is exceptionally hard to classify. Is it jazz? Is it classical? I think the answer is neither. What makes for such an enjoyable listen is just how different it is from so much music being performed today. Even though each work - and, if truth be told, each movement - has its own unique style, every note on this disc has the imprint of Fazil Say’s distinctive compositional style. It is this that separates a great composer from a mere methodologist. Coupled with Say’s unfaltering piano technique and musical ingenuity, I believe with all honesty that Fazil Say could, as Le Figaro put it, become ”one of the great artists of the twenty-first century”.

Genre:Neo-classical, Experimental, Piano
Country:United States

Inspired by nothing other than pure emotion, Ben Woods has turned his deepest, most raw feelings into ethereal piano melodies. The piano swells with heartfelt anguish and absorbs the listener in an atmosphere of brooding sincerity. A Collection of Thoughts is heart wrenching and beautiful.

Ben Woods is a full time student at the University of Plymouth UK, where most of this music is written and recorded. His style is has been described as dense and intoxicating whilst at the same time beautiful and deep. His music is written to audibly represent recent emotions and feelings with regard to situation, experience and circumstance. His latest work is predominantly piano based but Ben is always working on the newest approach he discovers. He has been working on a series of acoustic guitar lead soundscapes and has also been experimenting with turning written acoustic songs into beautifully layered drones.

Aldo Ciccolini - E. Satie:Works for Piano

Album: Works for Piano
Composer: Erik Alfred Leslie Satie
Pianist:Aldo Ciccolini
Year: 1986
Genre:Classical,Piano
Country:France

Aldo Ciccolini (born August 15, 1925), is a French pianist of Italian origin.Ciccolini is a
celebrated
interpreter and advocate of the piano music of the French composers Maurice
Ravel, Claude Debussy and Erik Satie.

Listening to Satie's dreamy, timelessly beautiful Gymnopedies, one could hardly imagine that their composer was a man more characterized during his lifetime - and after - by his eccentricities than his music.Erik Alfred Leslie Satie (1866-1925); born May 17, 1866 in Honfleur, Basse-Normandie, France, Erik Satie was a music composer, and a performing pianist, though mainly for café- and cabaret audiences. Satie wrote theatre and ballet music, as well as piano music. His compositions are original, humorous, often bizarre, and very minimalistic. His music is sometimes called furniture music, supposed to be in the background of everyday life. It is evidently anti-romantic and also anti-impressionistic.Satie eventually became a leading figure of the French avant-garde.

Ludovico Einaudi & Ballake Sissoko - Diario Mali

Album:Diario Mali
Year: 2005
Genre:Piano,World
Country:Italy,Mali

Mali Diary (Diario Mali) is a studio recording of duets between the highly successful Italian classical-crossover pianist, Ludovico Einaudi, and Mali musician Ballake Sissoko - one of the most gifted ‘kora’ players in Africa.

Diario Mali: a journey
Two friends who speak different languages, from different worlds; they meet in the desert and make each other a gift of their music in the shade of a henna tree. They create a free-flowing dialogue, they improvise.... the string of the kora and the piano keys-weave a story beyond time.
With traditional Mali music in the background they melt echoes of blues, renaissance harmonies and carribean beats.

Ólafur Arnalds - Eulogy For Evolution

Artist:Ólafur Arnalds
Album:Eulogy For Evolution
Year: 2007
Genre:Piano,Ambient
Country:Iceland

Beatifull album!!Olafur Arnalds is only 21 years old!!Absolutely recommended!!

Ludovico Einaudi meets a lyric-less, down tempo Sigur Ros

"
Icelandic composer and multi-instrumentalist Olafur Arnalds is bound to find himself met with comparisons to his fellow countryman Johann Johannsson: Arnalds' highly cinematic approach has that same instantly digestible quality that Johannsson, and for that matter Max Richter, are able to tap into. After its initial string swells, the sweetly sorrowful opener '0040' starts to sound vaguely reminiscent of the mournful piano music at the end of the '70s Incredible Hulk movies, and that certainly isn't intended as a jibe, it's lovely stuff, if rather dramatised. The ensuing pieces maintain this wistful, downbeat sound, riffing on various permutations of string and piano arrangement, only for Arnalds to whip the rug from under your feet with the brash guitar distortion of closer '3704/3837' which features some seriously histrionic quiet-loud post-rock action, only for all the drums and fuzz to crumble away abruptly for the lonesome, organ-fuelled coda. Gorgeous."(boomkat.com)

Dustin O'Halloran - Piano solos vol.2

Artist:Dustin O'Halloran
Album: Piano solos vol.2
Year: 2006
Genre:Piano
Country:United States,Italy

D
ustin O'Halloran
is an acclaimed pianist, who has done work with Sara Lov for Devics and has also been featured on the soundtrack for the Sofia Coppola 2006 film Marie Antoinette.O’Halloran grew up as a classically trained pianist but after a relocation to live with his father, he parted from the instrument for over a decade before he would rediscover his passion. After meeting his now other half of the independent shoegazer band Devics, Sarah Lov was the inspiration he needed to begin playing again. Through writing music and playing with Lov, his focus within the LA-based group slowly turned towards the piano. With inspirations ranging from Beethoven and Chopin to Mogwai, he takes his eerily gorgeous music from the Devics and strips it down to the bones. The result is timeless beauty that is full of aching emotion.

*****Reviews*****

".. The album is amazing in many respects and for O’Halloran, I would imagine it was a wild success in composing a lifetime of events and feelings into pieces of music. For his listeners, it really depends on your taste and perhaps even your level of involvement. If you have it on in the background, you may not notice the intricate details woven within each track and the sadness mixed with joy that can be felt throughout. However, if you turn out the lights, sit in a comfortable chair that will allow you to reflect on whatever the music inspires in your own self, I’m willing to bet that you will fall head over heels for Solos and soon find yourself enveloped in the masterpieces so perfectly directed towards the heart."(adequacy.net)

"..Piano Solos Vol. 2 is literally what its title says it is: a collection of piano solos, performed with an acute tenderness by Dustin O’Halloran, fifty per cent of US-born but Italy-based duo Devics. When heard through headphones, it’s music to slow a step to a crawl, to have the eyes finding a previously unseen splendour in something so everyday you’ve only ever overlooked it before now. It’s music that has the day’s star shining that little bit brighter; music that could, if amplified across the park, have pigeons dancing across the brilliant blue sky in perfect slow-motion synchronicity. A ballet set to a score to melt an ice queen’s heart."(drownedinsound.com)

"Piano Solos vol. 2," is a timeless array of concertos that fluidly cascade from serene to demanding, seemingly crying out to tell a story with each note. The cinematic opus unravels as if allowing a glimpse into O'Halloran's soul, or a soundtrack to his memories. The heart-swelling compositions appear fragile, yet haunting, capturing moments of melancholic bliss, brimming with introspection."(pluginmusic.com)

Eluvium - An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death

Artist: Eluvium
Album: An Accidental Memory In The Case Of Death
Year: 2004
Genre:Ambient,Piano
Country: United States

An absolutely gorgeous album containing only solo piano pieces. The pieces are simple, and relatively short, but ring out beautifully. Beauty in simplicity is the key theme here.

****Reviews****

"Returning exactly one year after dropping one of the most consistently gorgeous ambient rock records of the last decade with 2003's Lambent Material, Eluvium's Matthew Cooper follows it up with, well, one of the most consistently gorgeous neoclassical records of the last quarter century. An entire album of haunting, intimate suites for solo piano, this album is perhaps even more emotionally gripping than his previous acclaimed work. Recorded in less than two hours using only one microphone and no overdubs, it is completely live, with no editing, mixing, mastering or post-production of any kind on the recording. It is this sparse, naked beauty that makes this record so breathtaking and so addictive. Well, that... and the totally mind-blowing artwork.
(temporaryresidence.com)"

"The compositions on this album just seek deep into your heart and soul. Stylistically this album grabs me a lot more then the other more ambient works in the Eluvium catalog. Buy it, grab a glass of red wine or bourbon, turn off the lights, close your eyes and get swept away...."

"An all-piano album here, and it's great relaxation music. The pieces are very melodic and very expressive so it doesn't fall into the lump of "easy listening" aka non-challenging music. Parts of "The Well-Meaning Professor" even remind me of X-Japan's "The Art of Life".

Keith Jarret - The Melody At Night, With You

Artist: Keith Jarret
Album:The Melody At Night, With You
Year: 1990
Genre:Jazz
Country:United States

Keith Jarrett (born May 8, 1945 in Allentown, Pennsylvania, USA) is an American pianist and composer. He is considered one of the most important jazz pianists, renowned for his elaborate solo improvisations. In 2003 he received the Erhielt “Polar Music Prize”—the alternative Nobel prize for music.

****Reviews****

"
Keith Jarrett is an accomplished jazz pianist. Many of his recordings and live performances are characterized by passionate and brilliant solos - but this recording is different. Jarrett has chosen a series of standard tunes and presents them as if he's performing a personal concert for you and your fellow-listeners. The piano (extended in its dynamic range) speaks volumes here. The tunes are quite familiar, but I heard several as if for the first time; 'My Wild Irish Rose' quickly loses its over-sentimental character, and the simple American tune 'Shenandoah' acquires heartbreaking dignity. Highly recommended."

"I can't seem to pull myself back to work and away from this beautiful music. I have always loved Keith Jarrett solo, and he has satisfied my desire for beautiful, loving, classic solo piano with this CD. The songs in and of themselves are classics, and I have known many of them since childhood. "My Wild Irish Rose", "Someone to Watch Over Me", "Shenandoáh" - all lovely, familiar, and I find myself humming along. I am not a jazz fan, but I am passionate about the piano. This CD really answers my call for the perfect recorded piano music."

"Wow! This is the rare jazz record of late that I cannot get out of my CD player. Passion, simplicity, and an absolute command of space and silence echo throughout. As an earlier fan noted, the version of "Blame It On My Youth" is another definitive reading of this piece by Jarrett, who turns it into absolute poetry. This is the perfect record for quiet, romantic times, a great record for contemplation."

With the words of artist...

"My first album, a set of minimalism songs. Recorded with little resources but much illusion in my house, Toy Trains is a look back to my childhood, and the little memories I keep through the routine, work, responsibilities and all the burdens of us, adults... A nostalgic view of a happier epoch.

Bosques de mi Mente (Forests of my Mind) is my solo project, born in 2007. For me is a way to explore concepts like minimalism, climax, repetition, atmosphere, time, silence, stasis, noise, musique concrÈte and many more...
