3epkano are a Dublin based, seven piece band/ensemble who specialise in producing original and innovative soundtracks for films from the silent movie era. The band were formed in early 2004 by Matthew Nolan and Cameron Doyle. The line-up includes 2 electric guitars, bass guitar, keyboards/ organ, drums/percussion, cello and viola – the music is minimalist, guitar based, and almost entirely instrumental.

3epkano perform original contemporary live scores to classics of silent cinema.

We are conditioned to associate a particular form of music with silent film; music that is produced or composed to match or pre-empt action on screen, more times than not it suffocates what is happening visually. Film, in the way it's constructed, the way it's edited, the movement on screen, has a rhythm almost musical in itself. 3epkano's music tries to liberate the image and tap into the atmosphere, the tone that is being generated by the visuals and narrative on screen. Creating music for 3epkano is a process of patient exploration and tentative discovery, the result is a compelling and unique cinematic experience."

Portland multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick opens his account for Type Records with two spectacularly lovely pieces of music, after playing supporting roles alongside Machinefabriek (making appearances on Kruimeldief and Huis), Dolorean, Loch Lomond and Norfolk & Western. If these tracks are anything to go by, Broderick's music takes its cues from the work of Harold Budd, Erik Satie, and at times is even suggestive of a scaled down Arvo Part. 'Retreat' is right up there with anything from the Rachel's back catalogue, or for that matter Max Richter's The Blue Notebooks, also bringing to mind Sigur Ros' quieter, less bombastic moments with its rather romantic, wistful approach to contemporary composition loading strings on top of piano before erupting into a final choral sequence. 'Release' strips away the layers to focus in on Broderick's piano works, and demonstrates amply that this guy is in no short supply of compositional skill. Although not strictly Broderick's debut (a few homemade, now sadly out of print recordings have circulated over the past two years or so) this is a wonderful way of introducing yourself to the world at large. • The likes of Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky make up a decent portion of my extra-curricular music listening, so much so that it takes a truly amazing record in that genre to really get my attention. There's something about Beware of Safety, that caught my ear immediately. The slow atmosphere sinks through tendrils of perfectly-toned guitar, while white sheets of cymbals and a dissolving snare outline the rhythms, bass perfectly holding the two together. Where similar bands are plenty happy to be depressed in their drone, there's a lack of resignation on this record that gives these songs a little jagged edge to their pillowy, floating sounds. There's hope and there's anger (and a little depression, too). Listen to it on your regular stereo set-up, but to get the most out of it, play it through headphones, and picture cottony clouds below an azure sky... snow-capped peaks viewed from the roof of a city skyscraper... time-lapse film of stars passing through the velvety nighttime heavens. 5/5. - CD Baby

The first four pieces reveal RAPHAEL's classical roots, building from solo piano to ethereal choirs and full orchestration, including an exquisite version of the "In Paradisum" movement from Faure's Requiem.
Pieces 5 through 8 reveal the more primal side of the artist's inspiration, with an earthy, tribal trance music that successfully bridges Western and ethnic genres.
About the artist - Raphael... was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and raised by Benedictine nuns. Under their tutelage and encouragement, he developed a love for music, first learning about classical music and Gregorian chant. As a young man, after playing gypsy violin on the streets and utilizing his talents in rock bands, Raphael studied the piano formally at the San Francisco Conservatory.
He later spent a decade at Esalen, the renowned Northern California spiritual community. It was during his time there that he began to blend his various influences, draw from multiple cultures for compositional inspiration, and forge his signature style of healing and relaxation music.

Originally issued in 1989, Music To Disappear In was his first recording for the label Hearts of Space. A bit dated by this juncture, these nine songs, all original compositions but for the traditional opener ("Disappearing Into You"), use piano and keyboards as a central voice, creating a lulling web of atmospheric string sounds complemented by flute and percussion.

Grails are an American instrumental rock band from Portland, Oregon.The Grails fifth full-length picks up right where Burning Off Impurities left off and goes even further. Their instrumental land of improvised grooves, trance-like drones, Eastern modes and melodies, psychedelic textures, and above all, their very forward moving post-rock music, is unlike Pelican's or Mogwai's; it doesn't resemble Isis' or Godspeed You Black Emperor!'s. The Grails' brand of guitar-centric instrumental music is not given to simply building crescendos. Instead, it is interested in exploring the outer reaches of groove, space, and texture. It seems to be focused on how much they can pack into a given tune to make things like space and time disintegrate in the mind of the listener.

"...there are a few bands around that could be defined as post-rock, or just instrumental music if you wish, still aiming for the unknown, the exciting and adventurous. Grails, out of Portland, Oregon definately is such a band, combining a heavy stoner groove sensibility with added Eastern melodies to create a purple shrouded post-rock den.
“Take Refuge in Clean Living”, their fifth full length release, is a perfect example of an improving band, eager to learn from previous adventures while still adding different moves along the way.

If the title didn’t tell you already, “Stoned at the Taj Again”, is the album’s perfect opener. A heavy bass riff plodding along at mid-tempo while the band’s two guitarists lay out a web of swirling fingerpicked melodies. The breakdown in the middle is exemplary for a band like Grails, there’s no rushing, everything is based on groove and rhythm rather than build up and crescendo.

Their previous effort, “Burning Off Impurities”, already displayed Grails as more than just a post-rock band. And again, on this album, the mishmash of raga like drones that start off “11th Hour” and “Take Refuge”, the complex rhythms and fusion like drumming of Emil Amos (who joined OM recently) and the heady vibe throughout make Grails almost unclassifiable. There’s no boundaries, just adventure. And for us, listeners, there are big pay offs, like the massive organ sounds that enter “Take Refuge” halfway to transform the track into a ridiculously rewarding spacegroove. In late 2006, Portland musicians Kevin Davis and Jesse Robert W. drove over 1000 miles to reach a secluded cabin in the desert of southern Utah.
