Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson (2008)

Artist:Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson
Year: 2008
Genre:Folk,Indie Rock
Country:U.S

Listen:
Buriedfed

The album's first single, "Buriedfed", lives up to those impressive connections, pouring a woodsy, deceptively upbeat folk song through the damp, woozy atmospherics of Horn of Plenty. The proper setting could be a rowdy bar as easily as that record's quiet bedroom.

Kangding Ray - Automne Fold [2008]

Artist:Kangding Ray
Album: Automne Fold
Year: 2008
Genre:Downtempo, Electronica, Ambient
Country:Germany

Listen:
A protest song

Following his highly successful debut "stabil" (r-n 73), kangding ray releases his second full length record on raster-noton, entitled "automne fold".

with "automne fold", david letellier has evolved from the quiet, pristine flow of his debut record to sounds that are raw, dark and organic on this second release. pulsating rhythms become lost in within walls of saturated strings, words are spoken over bowed acoustic guitars, and analog synths collide with urban field recordings.
vocals are a central theme through the record. treated as raw materials, like any other sound, the voice operates as beat, speaks melodies or sets themes.

in some moments, "automne fold" retains the emotional simplicity of traditional song structures, where message and images come together, but also manages radical abstract textures, when tracks morph in closed forms of static sounds.

"automne fold" is an instrumental record, an album of 14 "folded" tracks, and a cinematic journey between groove and the senses.

Post-Rock Diamonds - Secreta Musica Compilation Vol. 2

Album: Post-Rock Diamonds - Secreta Musica Compilation Vol. 2
Compiled by: Hail and Alximistis
Year: 2008
Genre:Post-Rock

Post-Rock is a genre of alternative rock characterized by the use of musical instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbre and chord progressions that are not found in rock tradition. Simply put, it is the use of 'rock instrumentation' for non-rock purposes. Practitioners of the genre's style typically produce instrumental music.

The post-rock sound incorporates characteristics from a variety of musical genres, including ambient, jazz, electronica, and experimental. The traditional method of power chords is replaced with timbre and texture for guitar-play while the song and voice is abandoned by its ambience.

Max Richter - 24 Postcards In Full Colour

Artist:Max Richter
Album: 24 Postcards In Full Colour
Year: 2008
Genre:Neoclassical, Minimal
Country:Germany

Circles From The Rue Simon-Crubellier

Following eighteen months after Edinburgh-based pianist / composer Max Richter’s last album comes the release of the gorgeous, intriguingly framed ’24 Postcards In Full Colour’. Richter’s fourth album is a dazzling conceptual exercise of great beauty and emotional resonance. Certainly his most concise, ’24 Postcards…’may also be Max’s most coherent and compelling work to date. Beautifully played, richly textured and detailed, the album foregrounds Max’s sheer class as a composer and producer..

full of rich texture and emotional detail

As though extracting the absolute essence, simple, plaintive piano and string melodies - no excess, no waste, pure concentrate - butt up against passages of rich, borderzone ambience - radio static / voices leaking through dense, shifting drones. At points recalling the likes of Boards Of Canada, Bibio, and Gas (in terms of depth / grain rather than sound or style), at others Minimalism or the Elizabethan instrumental music of Henry Purcell, there’s also something about its nature that brings to mind authors like WG Sebald, Marcel Proust and filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.

Peter Broderick - Retreat/Release

Artist:Peter Broderick
Album: Retreat/Release
Year: 2007
Genre:Instrumental, Neo-classical
Country:United States

Portland multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick opens his account for Type Records with two spectacularly lovely pieces of music, after playing supporting roles alongside Machinefabriek (making appearances on Kruimeldief and Huis), Dolorean, Loch Lomond and Norfolk & Western. If these tracks are anything to go by, Broderick's music takes its cues from the work of Harold Budd, Erik Satie, and at times is even suggestive of a scaled down Arvo Part. 'Retreat' is right up there with anything from the Rachel's back catalogue, or for that matter Max Richter's The Blue Notebooks, also bringing to mind Sigur Ros' quieter, less bombastic moments with its rather romantic, wistful approach to contemporary composition loading strings on top of piano before erupting into a final choral sequence. 'Release' strips away the layers to focus in on Broderick's piano works, and demonstrates amply that this guy is in no short supply of compositional skill. Although not strictly Broderick's debut (a few homemade, now sadly out of print recordings have circulated over the past two years or so) this is a wonderful way of introducing yourself to the world at large. The American Dollar - A Memory Stream

Artist:The American Dollar
Album: A Memory Stream
Year: 2008
Genre:Post - Rock, Instrumental, Ambient
Country:United States

bump

Ready to break out of two albums worth of being loved by fans all over the Internet, New York City stationed duo The American Dollar release A Memory Stream on August 19th, 2008. John and Rich, the duo that comprise this talented collaboration, have been making music together for seven years, and what has come out of their sonic chemistry is a project that plays on all of their needs and wants in expressing an artistic sense of emotion and bold statement.

- Richard Cupolo / keyboard, guitar, bass, percussion
- John Emanuele / drums, keyboard, bass, guitar

"The imagery is heavy, and were this a film score, it would be the one for human nature. The song-to-song transitions and sweeping crescendos are often that grab listeners by the heartstrings to draw them in towards complete bliss – the album begins with the two part tracks “The Slow Wait,” and its effects are just that. Riddled with sadness and joy, there are points of light that poke through very dark undertones as you pass from tracks 1 through 11. With guitar stylings comparable to Bloc Party, the organ influence of Pink Floyd carries the album across. “The Slow Wait Part 2” is breath-taking, but like the debut albums from Interpol or Sigur Ros, the songs create a cohesion when heard from front to back. Long drives, late nights, and many other moments that are affected by the music that accompanies them, The American Dollar is a necessity to one’s personal soundtrack." - last.fm

"EVERY song on this cd is different, interesting...each song evokes an emotion that's introspective, artistic, and again, this isn't a rock record, it's more an art piece, background music, or a film score, but don't misunderstand that reference, this cd is still cool as shit!" - Rock and Roll Experience

Aranis - Aranis

Artist:Aranis
Album: Aranis
Year: 2005
Genre:Neo-classical, Instrumental,
Country:Belgium

Indrigo

Aranis is a group of 7 young Flemish classical musicians who mix a wide range of styles drawn from rock, classical and folk influences. Composed and arranged by Joris VanVinckenroye, Aranis’ defy many classical music conventions to produce their own form of accomplished yet impassioned expression.

a wonderful mixture of progressive rock, folk and classical music

"For a very small country, Belgium certainly has a easily identifiable sounding style of new music, and Aranis, a septet of fantastic young players, fits right into the chamber-rock sound that we all know from fellow country-groups like Louise Avenue, Cro Magnon, Julverne and Univers Zero, as well as other European bands such as DAAU, Noetra, Silence IV, Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Gatto Marte. The band consists of 2 violinists, accordion, piano, guitar, flute and double bass, with the flautist and one of the violinists also contributing some vocals. For fans of this sound, this will will thrill and amaze, and as it was self-released on a tiny label in Antwerp, don't delay too long in getting this, if it seems interesting to you. "Aranis is a contemporary band of young musicians. They alternate personal compositions with improvisation and intense solo performances. It's very hard to define the type of music Aranis brings. Acoustic/classic instruments are played in an unusual fashion. Aranis has taken the best parts of contemporary classical music, postrock and folk. Often compositions have a typical repetitive structure, which has a compelling and even flushing effect on the audience. The cinematic nature and strange rhythms of this music create a lasting impression. The atmosphere during the concerts is inimitable: passion, expressiveness and variation always play a key role".-Wayside Music

Lindstrøm - Where You Go I Go Too (2008)

Artist:Hans-Peter Lindstrøm
Album: Where You Go I Go Too
Year: (scheduled for release August 18-2008)
Genre:Electronica
Country:Norway

Listen:
The long way home

Hans-Peter never listened to dance music growing up, and the first time he really listened to it, was a few years back figuring out how to make it. He prefers quiet nights in with his family, and Hans Peter never really goes clubbing unless he's Lindstrom. As for artistic background, he used to play the piano in a gospel choir and the Hammond organ in a Deep Purple tribute band in his early twenties, before getting into Bob Dylan and folk/country music. Around 99' he got all fed up with music, sold his instruments, and moved from Stavanger to study literature at the University of Oslo. As retirement often proves unbearable to music lovers, he soon found himself busking the main street of Oslo with his guitar. One thing led to the other: he bought a sampler, borrowed a few 12"s to study the structure of dance music, and had a go at it.(from his official site)

Lindstrøm won the Spellemannsprisen in 2007.
