Techno and hip-hop in their earliest, formative stages have inspired Eliot throughout his career, and form the common thread running through the album. Slick analogue synth work and tight drum programming abound, as Eliot deconstructs his influences to create something that is both recognizable and completely futuristic. For listeners who remember a time when electronic music had a little dirt under its fingernails, The Outside will truly capture your imaginatio

Y

ou’re longing to be transported somewhere – preferably to that realm of euphoria to which critics testified in their ardent praise of previous Orchestra efforts
In interviews, Orchestra main-man Jason Swinscoe has described Ma Fleur as the soundtrack for an ‘imagined film’.
On an emotional level Ma Fleur is far too acute and dreadfully artificial. Soundwise it’s dreary and directionless – most unlikely to secure your affection.

Blackfilm - Blackfilm

Artist:Blackfilm
Album: Blackfilm
Year: 2008
Genre:Downtempo, Electronica, Ambient, Trip - hop

Hiding his face as well as his real name, even more interesting

questions arise when somebody attempts to get into Blackfilm’s
complicated music structures. Starting off in a somewhat
soundtrack perspective, Blackfilm slowly builds up an incredibly
dark environment, in which fearsome ambiences co-exist with
film-noir references. Evolving from downtempo electronic music
to orchestral paroxysms and, insanely, passing from down-pitched
nothingness to frozen urban landscapes, it becomes inevitable to
resist. Let yourself sink in the abyss…This second release,
carrying the same title with the composer’s name, is the very
first full-length album of this incredibly talented artist who
experts in combining modern day electronic music with classical
music references, while remaining absolutely original.

Highly recommended for those who enjoy acts such as Amon Tobin,
Portishead, FSOL as well intelligent dark electronic music.

***Review***

"The term cinematic gets tossed around a great deal in the music reviewing business, especially when it comes to those genres and styles of an electronic inclination. For the most part anything appearing particularly dark, atmospheric and epic seems to get pasted with this descriptor, and much of that undeservedly so. Perhaps the right adjective at the time, in comparison to Blackfilm's self-titled debut album, most other so-called cinematic peers fall short. This stuff simply defines cinematic. Its orchestral nuances and muffled piano ("Interference"), spectral voices and effective interlude transitions ("Eastern" and "Untitled"), among other elements, serve to elucidate this formative strategy. As the second release for young label Spectraliquid (based in Athens, Greece), "Blackfilm" reflects a promising musical direction and, more significantly, astute artist selectivity.
The disc invites its listener in with "Come & See," an introduction to both the sound textures and strong thematic aspects that intertwine its ten compositions. "Blackfilm" brings a post-structuralist film noir quality to the forefront of pieces characterized as sweeping, ghostly, orchestral, downtempo and, of course, epic. Brilliant "Stalingrad" figures prominently in this idea; its ten-minute duration encompasses abandoned Cold War ambience and ominous post-urban illbient alike. In shorter tracks, other strengths come to prominence. The gently pushing bass tones in "Five Years" are masterful, while the insatiable trip hop groove of "Sonar" burns well into the night. The sensual Indian singing wafting through "Mahabharata" arouses fantastic visions of that poem's grandeur and ancient metaphysics. The spacey tenor, echoing voices and maudlin strings of "Midnight to 4 A.M." conceives a vast and unquenchable insignificance in the face of a universe beyond human comprehension. "Blackfilm" is gritty music for an eyes-closed headspace, at once harrowing and enlightening.
Blackfilm seems to have sampled or used a live drum kit for virtually all its snare and cymbal needs, and this anchor to realistic desires creates a specific tension strung through its otherwise calm, yet alienating, mood. Soothing and atmospheric as it is, this music blurs the uncomfortable boundary between fleeting emotion and the gnawing abyss. It succeeds in its sublimity. The closing, brooding "Atlantikend" sends the listener's consciousness off on a trajectory pointed deep into the blackness between the stars, or perhaps deeper into the fabric of space and time itself, to a place so unknowable as to rewrite actuality. Soaked in the history of our world, "Blackfilm" grasps for its tenuous future.-- Dutton Hauhart

Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough

Artist:Telefon Tel Aviv
Album: Fahrenheit Fair Enough
Year: 2001
Genre:Electronica, Downtempo, Chillout
Country:United States

Telefon Tel Aviv is a music collective headed by Josh Eustis and Charlie Cooper of New Orleans, Louisiana. The two originally met in high school, but did not begin working on music together until after university studies. Since 1999 the two have been working to cultivate their sound, one that is based largely in electronic music, but that also shows flourishes of classical, vintage soul, ambient drone, and noise, among other things.

On Fahrenheit Fair Enough, guitars and pianos share the spectrum with alien sound forms, supported by slow breakbeat-style rhythmic patterns. The ambiences created for this record are spacious and rely on soft melodies and clever instrumentation. The title track, which opens the album, offers a recurring clean melodic line, at first gliding over hesitant sonic forms, before developing onto found sounds and broken beat structure. The same chilled ambiences are found all throughout Fahrenheit Fair Enough. On John Thomas On The Inside…, guitarist Alfredo Nogueira gives a surprising twist to the Telefon Tel Aviv sound by introducing a proper acoustic instrument in the apparent acoustic atmospheres generated by the duo. It takes a while to discern the real from the virtual, but it definitely brings an increased organic feel to the track. Elsewhere, it is the electronic nature of the duo’s compositions that prevails. What’s The Use Of Feet… is a perfect example of the more mechanical side of Telefon Tel Aviv’s music. Although a piano punctuate the track with chords, it is generally a more intricate formation that the duo presents here. This perfect symbiosis of sound proves to be an excellent formula for the New Orleans band. Telefon Tel Aviv create with this first album, a brilliant series of chilled electronica, avoiding all the downfalls of ambient by carefully setting up their ambiences.

Sébastien Schuller - Happiness

Artist:Sébastien Schuller
Album: Happiness
Year: 2005
Genre:Electronica, Downtempo, Indie Pop
Country:France

Sébastien Schuller is a classically trained percussionist who became an accomplished and eclectic multi-instrumentalist over the years, composing and interpreting his own work, backed by a few hand picked friends, including Paul Hanford (Brothers in Sound, Sancho).

"Who, or what, is Sebastien Schuller hiding from? In almost all of the songs on Happiness, his lyrics are hidden behind something, some filter or synth. In his video for “Weeping Willow,” and on his website, he wears a mask. Well, all good artists need some sort of affectation, and Schuller is one of them. If he feels the need to hide from us, well, as long as he’s making his music, then so be it. There is a feeling of happiness that emanates from his music, which is a combination of synth beats, slow piano, bells, and acoustic guitar. But he comes at the concept in an odd way. The sound is slow and the titles of his songs sad: “Tears Coming Home,” “Sleeping Song,” and “Alone You Walk.”
Happiness is reminiscent in some ways of Moby’s Play, especially in the way it is not heavy on vocals, and in the way that it will probably still be meaningful in ten years. It is also very eclectic: sometimes it sounds Celtic, and then, in the same song, I get the sense that I’m listening to the music under the sea. Sometimes there is a specific robotic beat and a soft, ghostly voice, then things speed up and Schuller sings without any changes to his voice. Actually, we don’t really hear him until track seven out of eleven (“Tears Coming Home.”) It can be easy to make the assumption that if we don’t hear an artist’s voice, they don’t have a good one (for instance, I’m not really sure what Julian Casablancas’ voice sounds like, so . . .). But Schuller has a sweet, Tom Chaplin (Keane) quality to it, making me wish we could hear it for what it is more often.
Oh, well. Happiness is what it is, and it is a beautiful peek into the soul of a clearly creative man.

Abakus - That Much Closer to the Sun

Artist:Abakus
Album: That Much Closer to the Sun
Year: 2004
Genre:Ambient, Downtempo, Electronica
Country:United Kingdom

A brilliant piece of music by Abakus. Just every single track brings really interesting melodic as well as rythmic elements. Some tunes are rather chilled, suited for a sunset on the beach :) - few others are more on the downtempo electro side. Real nice composition all in all.

"Liquid Sound Design have raised the bar even higher with the release of Abakus’s (aka Russell Davies) exquisite debut album ‘That Much Closer To The Sun’….. a perfect title for an album that literally does put some sunshine in your life after that first listen.

Superbly produced and laden with melodies and hooks ‘Closer to the Sun’ delivers on all fronts. Across eleven tracks Russell Davies has created an album that simply ‘works’ from start to finish, from the Balearic joy Nightwalker, to the recent single Indu plus future classics A Whole New Way & Magenta, the album is choca with musical gems.

The 12" Indu (with shiloh remix) has been getting support and plays from Digweed, Nick Warren, Phil Thompson and Hybrid who called it "outstanding!". The unusal hybrid track has bridged musical genres and sits equally at home on the dancefloor as it does at home....
As well Abakus, Russell Davies moonlights as one half Nada (LSD) and remixes the likes of The Orb and Kooler. Citing a variety of music influences from breaks to trance, progressive to dub, Russell has puts them all into the musical melting pot and created an album that defies pigeon holing."(sofasound.ch)

Four Tet - Rounds

Artist:Four Tet
Album: Rounds
Year: 2003
Genre:Electronica, Downtempo
Folktronica, Experimental
Country:United Kingdom

Kieran Hebden (born 1980 in Putney, London, England, United Kingdom) is a post-rock and electronic musician. Hebden first came to prominence as a member of the band Fridge before establishing himself as a solo artist under the moniker of Four Tet.

Hebden's music typically eschews the traditional pop song format in favor of a more abstract approach—his sound and melodies incorporate elements of hip hop, electronica, techno, jazz, and folk music with live instrumentation. His work as Four Tet shares some stylistic similarities with other musicians, such as Prefuse 73, who use computer editing techniques that give the music a staccato, cut-up feel.

perfect mix of subdued chill-out music and up-tempo beats

*****Reviews*****

"It's never easy to retain your status as a pioneer. Think of the way Massive Attack and Portishead patented a sound, only to find it had become aural wallpaper.Kieran Hebden's first album as Four Tet digitised his love of free jazz. His second, Pause, birthed "folktronica", a conflation of broken beats and fragile acoustics that, in many ways, became the new trip-hop. This new one, Rounds, is an exquisite synthesis of both. As much influenced by hip-hop and R&B as folk, Rounds invents its own dizzying, unlikely genres. Spirit Fingers, for instance, plays a violin jig at the pace of happy hardcore, complete with sibilant hi-hat, until it blurs into a hypnotising stillness.A trove of bewitching melody and subtle invention, Rounds succeeds not only as a meticulously conceived piece of art but also as a moving expression of human warmth."(arts.guardian.co.uk)

"It’s an incredibly romantic album, hypersensitive of breathing and decay and growth and glow, as one might be on a long November stroll with a beloved -- not speaking, fingers barely touching. In fact, the entire album is incredibly tactile, from tracks that seem like aural incarnations of touch, like "And They All Look Broken-Hearted"'s messy tangle of guitar threads, and "Slow Jam", which is all fingers running lazy over skin, to the titles themselves: "Spirit Fingers" and "Hands". "Hands" opens the album with a texture like a constantly shifting sidewalk on a blustery day. The plucked, scuttling staccato of guitar strings is the portrait of a single panel of cement as leaves and scraps settle into brief perfect patterns, before being kicked into new ones by gusts of wind. "My Angel Rocks Back and Forth", surely a contender for sweetest song title, contains a recurring piano motif that is lovely in its twirling float, gracefully drifting from the air to the ground. The slow, staticky beats beneath are exhalations of first frost on a clearly delicate day."(splendidezine.com)

"Rounds is a work of sonic bricolage. Unlike lesser artists, Four Tet manages to combine a jumble of sounds into beautifully-interlocking, natural, immediately comprehensible music, without any kitsch or clubby insipidness. Rounds is amazing."(Steve Kim)

Röyksopp - Melody A.M.

Artist:Röyksopp
Album: Melody A.M.
Year: 2002
Genre:Electronica,
Downtempo

Country:Norway

Röyksopp is an electronic music duo from Norway composed of Torbjørn Brundtland and Svein Berge. The group formed officially in 1998 and released their debut album
Melody A.M. in 2001.Songs from this album have been used in television adverts and computer games, Remind Me is currently featured in an advertisement for GEICO Insurance in one of their popular 'Caveman' ads, Eple was licensed by Apple and used as the introduction music for the Mac OS X v10.3 Setup Assistant. A remix of Poor Leno was featured in the SSX 3 soundtrack. The word Röyksopp is a stylized version of the Norwegian word for the puffball mushroom, "røyksopp" or literally, "smoke mushroom". This same word can also be used to describe the mushroom clouds that come from atomic bombs, so this imagery is also inherent in their name.

An eclectic fusion of ice cool Norwegian beats.

"Chilled-out or downbeat acts swept through the electronic scene during 2001 and 2002, prompting dozens of identikit compilations, all conjuring up images of exhausted clubbers returning home early in the morning and enjoying a cup of tea or a smoke after a hectic night out. And although downtempo electronica had always been largely album-based, most of these trackmasters didn't do much on the full-length front. The Norwegian duo Röyksopp, however, displayed a careful hand with the boards on their 2001 debut Melody A.M.. Röyksopp balances the haunted atmospheres of Boards of Canada with the more traditional "songwriting" sensibility of downbeat specialists like Groove Armada or Koop. The opener is proof enough, with a chunky bassline undergirding the spooky, ethereal refrain from Bobby Vinton's "Blue on Blue" recorded by some long-forgotten vocal chorus. There's much of beauty on Melody A.M., very textured and imaginatively produced to sound like few of their contemporaries; it's saying much to even admit that Röyksopp is occasionally the equal of such otherworldly acts as Boards of Canada or Goldfrapp. They seem a bit too indebted to the gauzy synths of '70s soundtracks, but there are a few good exceptions, like the distinctly '80s sense of artificial ethereality to the closer, "40 Years Back/Come." Picking up the ball right about where Air dropped it after Moon Safari, Röyksopp produced one of the most intriguing downbeat albums of the year."(allmusic.com)

Boards of Canada - Music has the right to children

Artist: Boards of Canada
Album: Music has the right to children
Year: 1998
Genre:Ambient,Tri Hop,Electronica,IDM
Country: Scotland

How could two guys from Scotland take very minimalist 'tunes', broken bits of melody, and beats that sound of the era of COmmodore 64's or Atari 2600s and make an album that sounds almost religious-- without a hint of the smugness or the pretense that blesses or curses other artists. What this album encompasses are ambient soundscapes pared with light scratching and a little bit more..... It's not like when this album came out they were doing anything strange or new.... it's just that what they were doing was so much better than what anyone else had done before.... or since....

Michael Sandison and Marcus Eoin are the two brains behind Boards Of Canada. Although Music Has The Right To Children was the first album from the band to benefit of a wide release, it was not their first record. In fact, the story of BOC started back in 1976, while the boys were still at college. Eoin only joined the band in 1986, as a bass player. By the end of the eighties, BOC was reduced to three members, and, by then, the characteristic melancholic sound of the band was maturing nicely. Beside the musical project, BOC were also experimenting with imagery, enhancing their live performances with films and photos. By the mid nineties, they started releasing Eps and albums on their own Music70 imprint, only to be noticed by Manchester based label Skam, for which BOC would record the Hi-Scores EP.

The release of Music Has The Right To Children, in April 1998, jointly by Warp and Skam, would receive much critical acclaim, being voted album of the month in many dance-orientated magazines. The typical blend of breaks, quirky melodies and clever samples would also meet public success. With Wildlife Analysis and An Eagle In Your Mind, BOC instantly introduce the listener to the sound that is so intrinsic to the album: a deluge of luxurious layers of synthetic waves, amazingly complex heavy hip-hop beats and clever voice samples, intricately woven into the rhythm patterns, or surfacing when least expected.

The music created by Sandison and Eoin always sounds so effortless and easy-access, but is very elaborated indeed, and very often work on many different levels, not always immediately perceptible. This means listening to Music… is a continuously renewed experience. Sandison and Eoin also insert little interludes between “main” tracks, to give more breathing space to the listener. It is difficult to isolate one track from Music…, as all the songs interact with each other, creating a patchwork of psychedelic dreams, surrealism and abstraction.

Artist:

Cinematic downtempo electronic melodies that are moved fast as fire from notes. Beautiful, faddist, erotic compositions by the Yosebu ( Vasilis Gioumbris) that accomplishes portrays technically the music that has in his brain avoiding anything standardising exists in this the style. A irreproachable combination from guitars, samples and voices in the point precisely that the electronic elements meets the orchestrical music and drift it in a other level. Marvellous!!
