Gurdjieff, Tsabropoulos - Chants, Hymns and Dances

Artists:Gurdjieff, Tsabropoulos
Album: Chants, Hymns and Dances
Year: 2004
Genre:Piano, Neo-classical, Minimalism
Bitrate:320 Kbps
Country:Greece

The music is simple, yet subtle; Anja Lechner on violoncello, and Vassilis Tsabropoulos on piano together weave a full texture of unforgettable music. Most of the album us based on melodies by Gurdjieff, around a trio of pieces by Tsabropoulos. The whole is serene, mournful, inspiring.
This is a quiet, peaceful disc, and yet it's not the kind of thing you'll probably play as background music. Something about these melodies works its way right *below* your consciousness, so that you want to really listen to it, really lose yourself in it. There are no lyrics, no voices, and yet these "chants" seem to strive to communicate something exquisitely beautiful, something tragically forgotten.
Perfect. Impossible. Heartbreaking
"Philosopher, seeker after the truth, reconciler of science and religion, teacher, guru to artists, writers and musicians, Gurdjieff was an enigmatic figure; even his birthdate is uncertain: 1866 or 1877. He taught movements "to alter or heighten consciousness" at his Institute for the Harmonious Development of Man, located outside Paris---a highly improvisatory process for which he composed equally improvisatory music. Technically untrained, he depended on skilled assistants to realize and write down his ideas, and found one in a devoted disciple: Ukranian pianist/composer Thomas de Hartmann, who selflessly suspended his own career and, after Gurdjieff's death in 1948, privately published and recorded some of their collaborations. As a composer, Gurdjieff, born at the border of Armenia and Turkey, was influenced by the region's ethnic and cultural diversity, by his childhood memories of the religious and philosophical songs improvised by his father, a Greek troubadour, by the hymns of the Greek Orthodox Church, and by his extensive travels through Europe and Asia. For this recording, the performers themselves arranged his compositions for cello and piano, adding five pieces by pianist Tsabropoulos, including three based on Byzantine hymns. Both players have been involved with Armenian, Ukranian and Greek Orthodox music; both are expert improvisers. Their strong feeling and affinity for the material allows them to approach it with both reverence and freedom; the playing is primarily subdued and inward. The piano texture ranges from delicate tinkling to full-blooded chords and arpeggios; the cello, playing mostly in the low and middle register, often in unison with the piano, sounds dark, warm and beautiful. The music, except for one lively dance, is slow, solemn, and mournful, in the minor mode. Melodies featuring oriental intervals are elaborated but not developed; based on single-note drones, harmonies are static or move in stepwise progressions but do not modulate. This lack of contrast and variety creates an otherworldly, disembodied atmosphere, despite several buildups of motion, dynamics, and intensity. "--Edith Eisler

Kronos Quartet - performs Philip Glass

Composed by:Philip Glass
Performed by: Kronos Quartet
Year: 1995
Genre:Neo-classical
Country:United States

String quartet No.2

Kronos Quartet is a string quartet founded by violinist David Harrington in 1973. Since 1978, the quartet has been based in San Francisco, California.Kronos specializes in new music and has a long history of commissioning new works. In fact, over 600 works have been created for the Kronos Quartet. They have worked with many minimalist composers including Arvo Pärt, Henryk Górecki, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, Roberto Carnevale, Terry Riley and Kevin Volans.

Philip Glass (born January 31, 1937) is a three-time Academy Award-nominated American classical music composer. He is considered one of the most influential composers of the late-20th century and is widely acknowledged as a composer who has brought art music to the American public (along with precursors such as Richard Strauss, Kurt Weill and Leonard Bernstein).

His music is described as minimalist, from which he distanced himself in being a composer of "music with repetitive structures". Although his early, mature music is minimalist, he has evolved stylistically.Currently, he describes himself as a "Classicist", trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Franz Schubert.
FIND out more about this GREAT musician!

The Quartet does a stunning and superb job here of some Glass's more emotional and essential works.Five quartets from Glass' later period - after the early operas and film scores. Very somber and serious in tone, these are among the most heartfelt works of a composer sometimes accused of lacking emotion. The Kronos Quartet delivers stunning performances of each of these works.

* "What's remarkable is how Glass's new musical language, shifting metres and triadic harmonies, suit the interaction of the bowing quartet. Buczak's funeral procession - reminiscent of Beethoven - serves as an elegy for a friend who died prematurely of AIDS. Over three movements Glass seems to turn his writing on its head, sounding more classical with each note. The freshest quartet, the Fifth, was specifically written for Kronos."Mark Prendergast

3epkano - At Land

Artist:3epkano
Album: At Land
Year: 2007
Genre:Neo-classical, Instrumental, Experimental
Country:Ireland

blood of a poet

3epkano are a Dublin based, seven piece band/ensemble who specialise in producing original and innovative soundtracks for films from the silent movie era. The band were formed in early 2004 by Matthew Nolan and Cameron Doyle. The line-up includes 2 electric guitars, bass guitar, keyboards/ organ, drums/percussion, cello and viola – the music is minimalist, guitar based, and almost entirely instrumental.

3epkano perform original contemporary live scores to classics of silent cinema.
We are conditioned to associate a particular form of music with silent film; music that is produced or composed to match or pre-empt action on screen, more times than not it suffocates what is happening visually. Film, in the way it's constructed, the way it's edited, the movement on screen, has a rhythm almost musical in itself. 3epkano's music tries to liberate the image and tap into the atmosphere, the tone that is being generated by the visuals and narrative on screen. Creating music for 3epkano is a process of patient exploration and tentative discovery, the result is a compelling and unique cinematic experience."

Johann Johannsson - Fordlandia

Artist:Johann Johannsson
Album: Fordlandia
Year: 2008
Genre:Neo-classical, Ambient, Electronica
Country:Iceland

melodia

The power of Beethoven and the beauty of Tchaikovsky...in our days.Listen to this absolute masterpiece of art!!

Jóhann Jóhannsson is an Icelandic-born musician, composer and producer. He also runs the record label Kitchen Motors in Reykjavík, the art organization/think tank/record label which specializes in instigating collaborations, promoting concerts and exhibitions, performances, chamber operas, producing films, books and radio shows based on the ideals of experimentation, collaboration and the search for new art forms. He has also written music for theatre, documentaries and soundtrack music for three feature films.Amazing..Highly Recommended!

Release Notes:

An American magnate builds a doomed utopia in the depths of
the Brazilian rainforest. A Victorian poetess laments the
death of Pan. A pagan rocket scientist blows himself up in his
Californian garage. A crippled German physicist draws up the
equations, which can make faster than light travel possible,
unseen by the rest of the world.

Jóhann Jóhannsson's spellbinding new album draws these
tantalizing threads together, weaving a musical tapestry of
hypnotic richness and surprising emotional depth.

Englabörn was derived from music that Johann wrote for an
Icelandic play using string quartet, piano, organ,
glockenspiel and percussion. These elements were processed and
manipulated, adding delicate electronic accents to the
otherwise entirely acoustic recordings. Virthulegu Forsetar
was a one hour-long piece for eleven brass players,
percussion, electronics, organs and piano. It shares
Englabörn's quiet, elegiac beauty, but replaces the brevity of
the first album's exquisite miniatures with an extended sweep
of sound that reveals a long, slow process of evolution.

Jóhann is involved in many different projects in his native
Iceland, including the all-analog Apparat Organ Quartet and
Kitchen Motors, the art organization/think tank/record label
which specializes in instigating collaborations and art
projects across diverse art forms. Among many other things, he
has also recently composed scores for the award-winning
animator Marc Craste (Varmints, 2008) and the American
independent film Personal Effects (David Hollander, 2008).

After IBM 1401, A User's Manual, Fordlândia is the second
installment in a proposed trilogy based on technology and
iconic American brand names. Whereas IBM 1401, A User's Manual
was a personal response to technology and its inevitable
obsolescence (inspired by his father's work with mainframe
computers in 1960s Iceland), Fordlândia springs out of a far
more diffuse set of influences. It brings together the soaring
grandeur of its predecessor – some sections were recorded with
the same orchestra in Prague – and the intimacy of Englabörn,
moving between heady, melting cadences and crystalline motifs
with gorgeous, dreamlike logic.

In short, Fordlândia is Jóhann Jóhannsson's most complete and
beautiful piece of music to date; a fascinating, immersive and
deeply rewarding web of ideas and melodies, which is sure to
win him a legion of new listeners.

Arvo Pärt - Alina

Artist:Arvo Pärt
Album: Alina
Year: 1999
Genre:Neo-classical, Minimalism
Country:Esthonia

Listen

Arvo Pärt (born 11 September 1935 in Paide) is an Estonian composer, often identified with the school of minimalism and more specifically, that of “holy minimalism” or “sacred minimalism”. He is considered a pioneer of this style, along with contemporaries Henryk Górecki and John Tavener.

the fragile beauty of music..Utter perfection!!

from Amazon.com
"This is a remarkable release, both for its beauty and its novelty at programming. Für Alina is a two-minute solo piano piece composed by Pärt in l976 that ushered in his "tintinnabuli" style, that is, the bell-like, simple, no-notes-wasted method for which he has become beloved and famous. On this CD, pianist Alexander Malter plays it twice, as the second and fourth tracks; each iteration takes almost 11 minutes (Pärt assumed it would be embellished, and he chose this pair for the CD). There are minute variations in tempo, emphasis, and rubato from one to the other, but, all that being said, it amounts to 22 minutes of the most beautiful, contemplative music ever performed. Almost equally gentle is Spiegel im Spiegel, played as tracks 1, 3 and 5 and scored for piano and, respectively, violin, cello, and then violin again. The instruments mirror one another (Spiegel is German for mirror), with notes added to the scale with each repetition, and so on. Almost impossible to describe in its loveliness, each of the three sets is beautiful; the cello in track 3 gives it extra mellowness. This is music staggering in its simple complexity and a treat for the ear and heart." --Robert Levine

Matthew Robert Cooper - Miniatures

Artist:Matthew Robert Cooper
Album: Miniatures
Year: 2008
Genre:Piano, Ambient, Neo-classical, Minimal
Country:United States

Matthew Robert Cooper is widely known as Eluvium and less known to be a part of Concert Silence. He makes cinematic ambiental guitar and piano-based music. His first album under his own name is released by Gaarden Records and is called “Miniatures”. Nine short saturnian interludes make up the first proper vinyl release by the sound artist who has intrigued your collapsed antenna many times before as Eluvium, Matthew Robert Cooper. Atmospheric chamber music from the cardboard box vortex. Miniatures moves from swirling spatial feedback manipulations to stripped down minimal piano pieces and back while you watch from the curbside the ghostly parade.

Brian Eno's ambient echoes and drones mixed with piano and string themes of Philip Glass austerity?..

"..Nine short, simply numbered titled saturnian interludes make up the release of atmospheric chamber music from the cardboard box vortex. Miniatures moves from swirling spatial feedback manipulations to stripped down minimal piano pieces and back while you watch from the curbside the ghostly parade. Eluvium’s strength lies in creating music that evokes a whole host of emotions. As horns hold long notes over a twinkling sheen of keys, the opener unfurls slowly and sets the contemplative mood of the album. Like what follows, it’s produced as if the music were being transmitted from within the womb: Sounds ring out and bleed together. Such fuzzy edges don’t mean that the sound is muddied, though. Instead, they charge the music with an insular coherence.
With one foot in pop music and one in avant-garde composition, Cooper has crafted an album that is at once minimal while deceptively complex. These instrumentals command a listener’s attention but never stoop to pop-music gimmickry. They exist in another world altogether, adrift in an echoing atmosphere.."indieducky.com

Rudi Arapahoe - Conversation Piece

The Silent Ballet IX is an absolutely beautiful collection of tracks which delicately combine strings and orchestral sounds with minimal electronics in a quiet post-rock sensibility. the compilation maintains a very cohesive, classical-inspired sound; each carefully selected track is an exquisite composition on its own, which also perfectly compliments the others. from the repressed intensity of the Bersarin Quartett, to the plaintive strains of Redhooker, to the soaring violins and piano arpeggios of Bosques de mi Mente, this is dream music for your nights and days.

Max Richter - 24 Postcards In Full Colour

Artist:Max Richter
Album: 24 Postcards In Full Colour
Year: 2008
Genre:Neoclassical, Minimal
Country:Germany

Circles From The Rue Simon-Crubellier

Following eighteen months after Edinburgh-based pianist / composer Max Richter’s last album comes the release of the gorgeous, intriguingly framed ’24 Postcards In Full Colour’. Richter’s fourth album is a dazzling conceptual exercise of great beauty and emotional resonance. Certainly his most concise, ’24 Postcards…’may also be Max’s most coherent and compelling work to date. Beautifully played, richly textured and detailed, the album foregrounds Max’s sheer class as a composer and producer..

full of rich texture and emotional detail

As though extracting the absolute essence, simple, plaintive piano and string melodies - no excess, no waste, pure concentrate - butt up against passages of rich, borderzone ambience - radio static / voices leaking through dense, shifting drones. At points recalling the likes of Boards Of Canada, Bibio, and Gas (in terms of depth / grain rather than sound or style), at others Minimalism or the Elizabethan instrumental music of Henry Purcell, there’s also something about its nature that brings to mind authors like WG Sebald, Marcel Proust and filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.

Peter Broderick - Retreat/Release

Artist:Peter Broderick
Album: Retreat/Release
Year: 2007
Genre:Instrumental, Neo-classical
Country:United States

Portland multi-instrumentalist Peter Broderick opens his account for Type Records with two spectacularly lovely pieces of music, after playing supporting roles alongside Machinefabriek (making appearances on Kruimeldief and Huis), Dolorean, Loch Lomond and Norfolk & Western. If these tracks are anything to go by, Broderick's music takes its cues from the work of Harold Budd, Erik Satie, and at times is even suggestive of a scaled down Arvo Part. 'Retreat' is right up there with anything from the Rachel's back catalogue, or for that matter Max Richter's The Blue Notebooks, also bringing to mind Sigur Ros' quieter, less bombastic moments with its rather romantic, wistful approach to contemporary composition loading strings on top of piano before erupting into a final choral sequence. 'Release' strips away the layers to focus in on Broderick's piano works, and demonstrates amply that this guy is in no short supply of compositional skill. Although not strictly Broderick's debut (a few homemade, now sadly out of print recordings have circulated over the past two years or so) this is a wonderful way of introducing yourself to the world at large. Aranis - Aranis

Artist:Aranis
Album: Aranis
Year: 2005
Genre:Neo-classical, Instrumental,
Country:Belgium

Indrigo

Aranis is a group of 7 young Flemish classical musicians who mix a wide range of styles drawn from rock, classical and folk influences. Composed and arranged by Joris VanVinckenroye, Aranis’ defy many classical music conventions to produce their own form of accomplished yet impassioned expression.

a wonderful mixture of progressive rock, folk and classical music

"For a very small country, Belgium certainly has a easily identifiable sounding style of new music, and Aranis, a septet of fantastic young players, fits right into the chamber-rock sound that we all know from fellow country-groups like Louise Avenue, Cro Magnon, Julverne and Univers Zero, as well as other European bands such as DAAU, Noetra, Silence IV, Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Gatto Marte. The band consists of 2 violinists, accordion, piano, guitar, flute and double bass, with the flautist and one of the violinists also contributing some vocals. For fans of this sound, this will will thrill and amaze, and as it was self-released on a tiny label in Antwerp, don't delay too long in getting this, if it seems interesting to you. "Aranis is a contemporary band of young musicians. They alternate personal compositions with improvisation and intense solo performances. It's very hard to define the type of music Aranis brings. Acoustic/classic instruments are played in an unusual fashion. Aranis has taken the best parts of contemporary classical music, postrock and folk. Often compositions have a typical repetitive structure, which has a compelling and even flushing effect on the audience. The cinematic nature and strange rhythms of this music create a lasting impression. The atmosphere during the concerts is inimitable: passion, expressiveness and variation always play a key role".-Wayside Music

Hans-Joachim Roedelius & Tim Story - Inlandish

Artist:Hans-Joachim Roedelius & Tim Story
Album: Inlandish
Year: 2008
Genre:Neo-classical, Ambient, Electronica
Country:Germany - United States

listen:
The orchardist

Inlandish is the second collaboration between American neo-classical composer Tim Story and Hans-Joachim Roedelius of legendary German groups Cluster and Harmonia.Hans-Joachim Roedelius born 1934 in Berlin, nurse, physiotherapist, masseur, escort of the dying, composer, writer, poet, foto-collage-artist, producer, curator.Foundermember of the artslab "Zodiak" in Berlin(1968) and groups such as : "Human Being","personare","Kluster","Cluster", "Harmonia", "Friendly Game", "Aquarello" and "Tempus Transit".

On Inlandish Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Tim Story explore musical and personal memories. Their exuberant reimaginings of ideas set forth by Cluster freely alludes to the entire history of electronic music. Roedelius is acknowledged as an artist of unique expressive power. His piano themes ground each of the 12 works, above which Tim Story integrates a wonderful jumble of atmospheric pads and thick synth leads as well as electronic buzzes, clicks and groans. Viola, oboe and cello also inhabit a few tracks and tinge each unique vignette with elegance and tenderness. The experience is an adventurous exploration, delivered as if in intimate, personal touch with the listener.

emotionally ambiguous mesmerising soundscapes

"Back In Stock. A sequel to the acclaimed Lunz project, this follow-up finds Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Tim Story shedding their original collaborative moniker in favour of recording under their own names. It's great to hear the Cluster and Harmonia veteran in such fine form (he'll be 74 this year), making effortlessly graceful ambient music that still sounds like it's at the very forefront of the genre. Inlandish is bound to prompt comparisons to Ryuichi Sakamoto or Harold Budd for the glowing, meditative piano pieces at the heart of the record, but the kind of electronic treatments and additional instrumentation reaches beyond any single theme, with some compositions simply augmented by ghostly strands of cello, while others more fully embrace digital manipulation, as on 'Serpentining'; a melding of melodic piano and humming circuitry. Of course, there's some great synth work on the album too, particularly when it comes to the vintage krautrock tones of 'Beforst', a piece wonderfully redolent of Roedelius' past. Excellent.(boomkat.com)"

Renbourn John - The Lady And The Unicorn

Artist:Renbourn John
Album: The Lady And The Unicorn
Year: 1971
Genre:Neo-classical, Traditional folk
Country:United Kingdom

John Renbourn (born August 8, 1944, Marylebone, London, England) is an English guitarist and songwriter. While most commonly labelled a folk musician, Renbourn's musical tastes and interests take in early music, classical music, blues and world music.Throughout the late '60s and early '70s, John Renbourn alternated albums by the Pentangle and duet records with his longtime partner Bert Jansch with small-scale, somewhat experimental solo records. 1971's instrumental THE LADY AND THE UNICORN blends Renbourn's extraordinary six and 12-string acoustic guitars with subtle flute, violin, tasteful sitar, and hand percussion.

THE LADY AND THE UNICORN is part early music (the opening "Trotto" and "Saltarello"), part traditional English ballad (the closing medley incorporates "My Johnny Was a Shoemaker" and "Scarborough Fair"), and part jazz and world-tinged Renbourn originals. These eight tunes are flawlessly played, with enough humor and grace that Renbourn's ample chops are never the main attraction. THE LADY AND THE UNICORN should be of interest to Renbourn's usual folk audience and to fans of early and Renaissance-era music.

Personnel: John Renbourn (guitar, sitar); Dave Swarbrick (violin); Don Harper (viola); Tony Roberts, Ray Warleigh (flute); Len Nicholson (concertina); Terry Cox (hand drums, glockenspiel).

"...a beautiful instrumental record...a variety of short songs, medieval pieces and early classical things done with guitar, flute, violin, and even a trace of sitar...The selection of timeless, haunting, exquisite medieval and renaissance music on this album will truly transport you to another time and place"

Album: Fleursy Music
Year: 2007
Genre:Instrumental, Electronica, Neo-classical, Ambient
Country:Japan

Fleursy Music" is a breathtakingly beautiful album by young Japanese composer. He creates music by merging electronics with many type of acoustic instruments such as piano, organ, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, sax, clarinet, flute, guitar, glockenspiel, accordion, melodion, drums and percussions. These instruments are remarkably well textured as he records in very unique situations - like in the tunnel, mountains, abandoned hotel lobby and concert halls - capturing the natural reverberations of the atmosphere. And after recording, he processes and carefully layers these sounds in his computer to obtain the perfect combination. The 10 tracks here were selected among over 150 compositions he made during these 2 years.

Ryan Teague - Coins & Crosses

Artist:Ryan Teague
Album: Coins & Crosses
Year: 2006
Genre:Neo-classical, Instrumental
Country:United Kingdom

Coins And Crosses is an ambitious journey through musical landscapes incorporating methods and techniques both modern and ancient, continuing and developing the themes established in Teague’s debut release Six Preludes. Much of this new material is likened to sacred music with its emphasis on slow brooding textures which give way to passages of shimmering light and ecstasy.

The instrumentation, incorporating strings, harp and voice, echo timeless practices whilst being offset by subtly woven electronic treatments, generating an austere and rich fabric of sound. The album features a 24 piece String Orchestra performed by the Cambridge Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by Tim Redmond.

Fazil Say - Black Earth

Artist:Fazil Say
Album: Black Earth
Year: 2003
Genre:Neo - classical, Piano
Country:Turkey

Check out this performance from Fazil Say, a world-renowned Turkish pianist and composer. Fazil Say is guest of the New York Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, Concertgebouw Orchestra, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, the Orchestre National de France, Munich Philharmonic and many other leading orchestras worldwide.

‘Black Earth’ is a CD which is exceptionally hard to classify. Is it jazz? Is it classical? I think the answer is neither. What makes for such an enjoyable listen is just how different it is from so much music being performed today. Even though each work - and, if truth be told, each movement - has its own unique style, every note on this disc has the imprint of Fazil Say’s distinctive compositional style. It is this that separates a great composer from a mere methodologist. Coupled with Say’s unfaltering piano technique and musical ingenuity, I believe with all honesty that Fazil Say could, as Le Figaro put it, become ”one of the great artists of the twenty-first century”.

Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks

Artist:Max Richter
Album: The Blue Notebooks
Year: 2004
Genre:Neoclassical,Minimal
Country:Germany

Max Richter classifies his solo work as "post-classical," a word at which many people cringe, including myself in most instances. With so much cheesy forced emotion and boring drawn out contorted Bach out there it's difficult to sort through and really find the artists that are creating a new breed of classical that is actually listenable.

classical minimalism and ambient electric

The Blue Notebooks is more than just listenable, it's heartbreakingly incredible. It puts most striving modern day composers to shame. It's even puts quite a few old masters to shame. This album is a masterpiece. Inspired by Philip Glass and Kafka's Blue Octavo Notebooks, Richter built his own analog instruments, paired them with classical string instruments and made one of the most stunning and affecting albums ever recorded. The delicate melancholy songs were used to soundtrack one of my favorites movies of 2006, Stranger Than Fiction. The soundtrack made the movie. The Blue Notebooks is absolutely gorgeous and I would recommend it to anyone regardless of whether than enjoyed classical compositions or not.

Artist:Ólafur Arnalds
Album:Variations of Static
Year: 2008
Genre:Neoclassical, Ambient, Experimental

Fragile, emotional, classical indie music would maybe be the best term to describe Ólafur Arnalds’ music. Combining classical instrumentation with an indierock aesthetic there are obvious comparisons to Sigur Ros, but Arnalds is sculpting his own epic, string-laden compositions.

Only 21 years of age, Ólafur hails from the suburban Icelandic town, Mosfellsbær, just a few kilometres outside Reykjavík. He as immersed himself completely in the world of delicate symphonic compositions in a near weightless orchestral undertaking. Mixing strings and piano with loops, ambiance, electronics and beats. Debut album ‘Eulogy for Evolution’ takes the listener on a journey, representing different periods in life, from birth to death. The follow-up 5-track EP ‘Variations of Static’ so far has only been available as a limited tour edition. While keeping the classical foundations of his debut album, here Arnalds incorporates crackling electronics and the dead voice of a machine; like vague memories of tradition lost within the digital age we all live in.

The Sea and the Bells - Rachel's

Artist:Rachel's
Album: The Sea and the Bells
Year: 1998
Genre:Neoclassical,Minimal,
Experimental
Country:United States

The Sea and the Bells is the third LP from the instrumental group Rachel's. It was released in October 1996 on the Quarterstick label. The title is taken from that of a book written by Pablo Neruda.Rachel's is an American post-rock group formed in Louisville, Kentucky in 1991 by ex- Rodan guitarist Jason Noble. The group's work is strongly influenced by classical music, particularly inspired by the minimalist music of the late 20th century, and its composition reflects this. While the trio forms the core part of the band, the group's recordings and performances feature a varying ensemble of musicians, who play a range of string instruments (including viola and cello) in combination with piano, guitars, electric bass guitar, and a drum set that includes a large orchestral bass drum.

"Not only does this CD have one of the coolest packaging designs I've ever seen, but it has some of the nicer music I've heard in quite some time as well. As a group, Rachel's have been around for several years now with an ever-changing lineup composing themed orchestral music that always manages to move me. This release is no different.

Like their other releases (Music For Egon Schiele, Handwriting), there is a definite theme to the entire album and this time around they've moved from the world of different artists to sea travel. As a whole, it's probably a little more experimental and fractured than their first two releases, but it works really well as a concept album and a cohesive piece of work. Many times on the album, the music simply drifts off into ambience, while other sounds like the rocking of a boat and the creak of wood make their way into the mix. Instead of being a distraction, however, it simply adds to the atmosphere of the recording.

The disc starts off with the fairly rambunctious (for the Rachel's) "Rhine & Courtesan," with piano and backing strings before dying down a bit into one of the segues that I spoke of above. When the song takes off again, the strings and piano part attack even more before winding down into the simple beauty of "The Voyage Of Camille." A piano again takes the center stage in the next two tracks, including the amazing ever-changing fourth track entitled "Lloyd's Register." The album holds onto the meloncholy for most of the first half until unsettling itself with the eighth track, "The Sirens." From there, the album drifts again through several amazing pieces and concludes with "His Eyes." Overall, the disc continues the group's penchant for somewhat haunting music, but they manage to pull it off every time.

Basically, if you've heard the group before and enjoyed them, you won't be dissapointed by this disc. It's their longest release to date and probably their most ambitious in terms of what it accomplishes. With 17 different musicians contributing to the end product, the instrumentation is some of the most varied and intricate and the group has definitely tried some new things. It shows what former indie-rock artists can do when they get ahold of an orchestra. It's one of the rare albums that I know I'll still probably listen to 30 years down the road."
